This past weekend had good success for most fishing for Whitefish even though we had to move into shallow water after a pressure crack opened up in our area last week. The pressure crack is now healing up and we will be moving back out to deeper water this week with hopes that we can receive a bit of snow cover to help provide some traction. We continue to find great success catching fish using Rapala baits such as the Rapala Jigging Rap along with the Jigging Shad Rap working these baits right off bottom. The key to being more successful with your rods and reels is definitely using a rod that is very sensitive and using a braided line which will allow you to feel light bites along with getting good hook sets in deeper water. With the forecast showing cold weather for the next couple of weeks we should be looking really good for our ice fishing season going for many more weeks.
Well after a couple of days with warmer temperatures along with some rain it really has improved travel on the ice in areas that had previously had rough ice conditions.A sharp cold front moved through last night dropping the temps to around 10 degrees for a high today with strong north winds making it impossible to move ice houses around so we kept them all hunkered down where they were and found the fishing to be very good.
Everyone fished whitefish today finding the fish to be very cooperative in the morning through early afternoon then the fishing slowed a bit as the afternoon wore on but still found action as the fish moved through it just began to come in spurts where a pod of fish would move through and catch a few then it would be some time before we would see another pod come through.Over all it was a great day everyone caught there limit and also caught many more that were put back.
Ice thickness is good with in most areas we are finding anywhere from 12 to 15 inches of very hard ice. With the lack of snow on the ice along with cold temps in the forecast for this week we should only continue to make ice each day.
